Using Color Analysis to Dress Well

I am all about dressing well with ease. And when it comes to fashion, color is just as important as cut, fit, length, etc. Each person's relationship with color is as unique as their style. In the same way that a pair of slacks tailored to fit your much taller friend would be too long on you, certain colors like forest green can either complement your features or wash you out completely.

Because I am always in search of pieces that complement me best, I am fascinated by the color analysis trend that is sweeping social media at the moment. You've probably seen the videos where professionals identify a person's ideal color palette based on their seasonal type—whether they're a winter, spring, summer, or autumn. Beyond that, there are nuances like cool, warm, muted, or bright tones. It's all so interesting but most of us aren't going to spend the time or money to have a true analysis done so we just try our best to guess what works on us. Luckily, a few people out there realized how to do it yourself with the help of Chat GPT so I wanted to share!

The first step is to either find or take a photo of yourself in natural lighting. You will then want to upload this photo to Canva (the free version works just fine) and use the eyedropper tool to select your skin tone. Copy down the HEX code that is listed, a six-digit number to identify color. It should be in this format: #691838. Gather your HEX code for hair color and eye color as well. Then go to Chat GPT and enter this prompt: "My skin tone is #______, my hair color is #______, and my eye color is #______. What color analysis palette am I in terms of seasons spring, summer, winter, fall?"

You should receive a pretty detailed answer telling you which season's color palette suits you best and based on that you should know what colors complement you. This can be so helpful to keep in mind when shopping for clothes and makeup. I put together a summery outfit based on the color palette of each season below to show how this can be applied in your daily fashion!

Winters have cool undertones and often have dark hair and deep, contrasting eyes. They look best in bold and clear colors such as true red, royal blue, emerald green, and pure white.

People in the Spring category typically have warm undertones. They look best in warm and bright colors such as peach, coral, light green and soft blues.

Summers have cool undertones and often have light to medium ash brown or blonde hair with light eyes. They look best in soft and muted colors such as soft pink, lavender, powder blue, and soft grey.

Autumns have warm undertones and often have red or auburn hair with golden brown eyes. They look best in earthy and rich colors such as olive green, rust, terracotta, mustard yellow, and warm browns.
